Frequently Asked Questions On Corner Caps

Frequently Asked Questions On Corner Caps

At Pontoon Specialists, we get a lot of questions from customers looking for new corner caps. To help make your experience smoother, we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions that address some common concerns.

What are Corner Caps?

Corner Caps are designed to protect and finish off the edges of the pontoons. They help prevent damage to the boat and can also contribute to the boat's overall aesthetics.

Pontoon corner caps are usually made from durable materials like plastic, aluminum, or stainless steel, and they can be either decorative or functional. Most of the time it serves as protection for the pontoon corners during docking or storage.

How To Determine the Correct Fit for My Vessel?

There is no system or program to specify the exact product for your vessel's make and model, finding the correct fit for your pontoon corner cap can be quite challenging. Here are some guidelines Pontoon Specialists suggests in helping determine the correct fit:

  1. Measure the Existing Corner Caps
    • Measure the current corner caps and find one that matches those measurements with the ones we carry.
    • If you’ve lost a corner cap or don’t have it on hand, no worries! You can simply measure the opposite side if it has the same corner cap to ensure a perfect fit.
    • If you don’t have either corner cap, you can measure the space where it needs to be installed.
  1. Inspect the Current Corners
    • Look at the existing corners: When replacing old corner caps, examine their shape and how they align with the edge cap on your pontoon. If your pontoon has a rub rail, consider its impact to help determine the right style.
  1. Looking For OEM Specific
    • If your pontoon is from a known brand, the manufacturer may provide specifications on corner cap sizes. This can be the most reliable source of information. Look for part numbers, model numbers, or guidance on size compatibility.
    • Some pontoon manufacturers even have specific corner caps that are custom-made for their models, so contacting the manufacturer for recommendations could ensure a perfect fit. This usually only works on vessels less than 7 years old.
  1. Consider Material and Style
    • Corner caps are available in various materials, including plastic, aluminum, and stainless steel. While the material doesn’t affect the fit, it does influence durability and resistance to wear and weather conditions.
    • Choose a style that complements your pontoon’s design, keeping in mind that some caps may have a more decorative or functional design.
  1. Test Fitting
    • Test the cap before securing it. Place the corner cap on the pontoon without attaching it to check how well it fits. The cap should sit flush against the pontoon with no gaps, and it should cover the edges fully.
    • Ensure that the holes for screws (if needed) align perfectly with pre-drilled holes or marked areas on the pontoon.
  1. Buy Universal Caps (If needed)
    • Check the back of your current corner cap for any part numbers. Few companies built corner caps for this industry so we may have the exact part.
    • Many of our Marine Grade plastic corner caps are universal and adjustable in height and can be trimmed down to get the appropriate fit.

What If I am Unable to Find Pontoon End Caps That Match the Measurements I have taken?

  • If you can’t find a corner cap that fits from our selection, the best option may be to replace both sides (such as the front and back, or front and rear on the same side). Since it's unlikely that anyone will see all four corners at once, you can replace all four sides if appearance is important to you.

Do you Carry a Corner Cap That Will Fit My Specific Pontoon?

  • All of the pontoon corner caps offered by Pontoon Specialists are aftermarket, meaning they are not specific to any one brand or model of pontoon. There is a chance we have the exact one, but no guarantee. If your vessel is 3 to 5 years old and you're looking for the exact corner cap, we recommend contacting the manufacturer using your HIN number.

What if I Purchase the Wrong Corner Cap?

  • Most of our products are returnable for more information, be sure to check out our return policy.
